A journey through the Bible: a new app takes you back to the time of Jesus

Thanks to the invention of the printing press, Gutenberg took the Bible to every library in the world. Now, a new app wants to repeat the story; but this time, with smartphones and tablets.

It’s called ‘BibleWorld,’ because its creators wanted to highlight that the Bible isn’t just a book: it’s an experience.

GUALTIERO CARRARO

Director of “BibleWorld” Project

“The idea was to create an app that could take you to the world of the Bible: not only to the biblical text, but rather to the times and places found in the Bible.”

More than 20 people have worked in this project for the last two years. They have used the latest technology available to create it.

The app allows users to have a 3D tour inside the Temple of Solomon, or even follow the path of Moses through the desert.

“‘BibleWorld’ is one of the first examples in which the language of digital interactivity of 3D is applied to culture. We could  say that we make it ‘game-like;’ that is, a form of cultural entertainment close to the Bible. Actually, we could say that sacred art did the same, so we’re not talking about something new, just about newer technology.”

The ‘app’ offers many ways of approaching the Bible. For example, it explains passages of the Holy Scriptures with images, just like the windows in cathedrals did in the Middle Ages.

“We have a lot of different ways of reading the Bible: we can read it all the family together, also with the little ones. We also have the chance of ‘surfing’ the Bible with images: there are 600 episodes, like in a huge comic.”

The app ‘BibleWorld’ pays homage to a sacred text. But it also brings together history, art and archeology, to retell the story of Humanity.
