“The Holy Spirit is a teacher of life”

Pope Francis celebrated Pentecost Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. This feast marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. The Pope centered his homily on this event.

Pope Francis

“The Holy Spirit teaches us that He is our inner Teacher. He shows us the right path during all situations of life. He teaches us the way, the path. In the first times of the Church, Christianity was called “the way” and Jesus Himself is the Way. The Holy Spirit teaches us to follow Him, to walk after His footprints. More than a teacher of doctrine, the Holy Spirit is a teacher of life.”

And among the most important things the Holy Spirit reminds Christians, the Pope added, is to live out the commandment of love.

“The Holy Spirit reminds us of everything that Jesus said. He is the living memory of the Church. And while he makes us remember, He also makes us understand the words of the Lord. A Christian without memory is not a true Christian, he’s a half-way Christian, a man or woman slave to the moment, who doesn’t know how to appreciate the treasure of their history, who can’t read and live it as a history of Salvation. But, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can interpret the inner inspirations and the events of life in the light of Jesus’ words.”

At the end of his homily, the Pope referred to a new gift from the Holy Spirit, communication. He explained that it helps Christians “talk to God and with others,” and that without the Holy Spirit evangelizing would not be possible.
